Your Headshot Wardrobe: Dos And Don'ts

by Ernest Cox

For many professionals, the most important photograph of their life is their headshot. This headshot will convey who you are as a person and a professional, which can be critical for the success of your career. One of the biggest choices you will need to make prior to getting professional headshots is your wardrobe. When it comes to choosing the ideal wardrobe for your headshots, here are a few simple dos and don'ts to keep in mind.

Do Choose the Right Colors

Pick a color that works well with your hair color, skin tone, and is age-appropriate. If you cannot decide, wearing neutrals is always a good, professional option. Do not wear more than a couple of colors and make sure the colors complement one another. Avoid loud prints, as these can draw attention away from your face, as well.

If you want to wear a print, choose a top, blouse, or coat that features a smaller print, such as checkered. Whatever you pick, make sure the color and print make sense for your profession.

Don't Pick Unflattering Necklines, Collars, and Sleeves

Choose a neckline and sleeves that are flattering and not too revealing. For example, if you want a more professional look, avoid a plunging neckline or spaghetti straps. You can also choose to layer your clothing. However, make sure that the layers make sense and work well together. For example, you can choose a bottom layer that features a smaller pattern and pair it with a complementary blazer or coat.

Pairing jewelry or other pieces to your outfit can also draw the eye in and pull the ensemble together. For example, for a woman, a small pair of earrings or a statement necklace are great options. However, avoid pieces that will crowd the space or overwhelm your face.

Do Bring Along Several Options

Instead of relying on one option that turns out will not work with the backdrop, lighting, or you simply do not find flattering, make sure to bring along several options. Choose basics that can work together well. For instance, bring along a few tops, blazers, coats, and pieces of jewelry as options.

Ask the photographer to help you put together a couple of different options and take a few test shots. This will help you make a final decision on the ensemble and ensure that your final look is just the way you envisioned it.

From bringing along a few options to choosing the right colors, jewelry, and other accessories, there are several things to keep in mind when picking a look for your professional headshots. To learn more or to schedule a headshot, contact a professional headshot photographer such as Expo Traffic.

About Me

Finding the Right Photographer for Your Event

The best way to keep your special memories alive is to hire a professional photographer to capture them as they happen. But after working with hundreds of professionals over the years as a special events planner, I know first hand that not all photographers are created equally. Some can really focus in on their human subjects to capture emotion that comes right out of the photos, while others are more attuned to making the surroundings in a photo stand out like a 3D feature. So I figured that I could help people who are looking to hire a photography find the best possible fit for the occasion that is going to be documented. Learn the right questions to ask, find out what types of skills to look for, and figure out what tools and resources are needed to capture all the details of your special event.
